PoetryFoundation.org is one of several efforts underway by the Poetry Foundation to strengthen the reciprocal relation between poetry and its audience. Harriet Monroe, who founded
Poetry in 1912, wrote about this in her
first editorial for the magazine:
This art, like every other, is not a miracle of direct creation, but a reciprocal relation between the artist and his public.
Every week, we hope that the news and articles we publish add to the growing public for poetry. To that end, we seek out literary journalists to
profile poets,
review readings, and report
on poetry as it intersects with other art forms, and with the culture at large.
At the core of the site is
an archive of more than 3,000 contemporary and classic poems in English by more than 250 poets, which includes poems and essays from back issues of
Poetry magazine. We'll be continually adding to the archive, and think of it as an anthologycontinually updated by editors, by critics, and by readers as they search, read, and comment on what they find.
For original new work and critical literary reviews, we encourage readers to turn to the pages of
Poetry. On this site, our aim is to represent all forms of poetry, using every means possible to broaden the audience.
