The Poetry Foundation joins University of Illinois in Chicago's Institute for the Humanities and Departments of English and African American Studies to co-host a celebration of the life and legacy of Gwendolyn Brooks, one of America's most beloved and respected poets. Brooks produced a prolific body of work in her lifetime and addressed many social issues throughout her career, such as poverty, injustice, and the intersections of race and womanhood, while becoming Poet Laureate of Illinois and the first black author to receive a Pulitzer Prize. The event will include readings and a discussion of Brooks's legacy from five poets and professors working in Chicago today, CM Burroughs, Reginald Gibbons, Angela Jackson, Quraysh Ali Lansana, and Ed Roberson.
Co-sponsored with the University of Illinois in Chicago's Institute for the Humanities, English Department, and African American Studies Department
