Poetry & Music: Mahler’s Wunderhorn: A Soldier’s Tale
Grainger Ballroom, Symphony Center
220 South Michigan Avenue
Chicago, Illinois
This special concert features the song set by Gustav Mahler from the immortal collection of German 19th-century folk poetry, Das Knaben Wunderhorn ("Youth's Magic Horn"). This performance memorializes the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day 1918—in other words, the first Veterans' Day—and honors all the veterans who served the United States from the days of the First World War, but with particular emphasis on those who have served in the present conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Former Chicago Opera Theater conductor Alexander Platt leads the Caroga Arts Collective along with current members and recent alumni of the Ryan Opera Center, while author, actor, and veteran Benjamin Busch reads poems.
