All are welcome to a poetry discussion and creative writing workshop, “Exile,” with Leonora Simonovis.

In this session, we will focus on poets in translation that explore the notion of exile, both as the consequence of external circumstances and also what the cultural critic Edward Said calls “the unhealable rift between a human being and a native place, between the self and its true home.” We will discuss how different poets approach the subject and how they navigate their uprootedness in regards to language, culture, gender, and social location. We will generate new work by building on, and connecting with, what we discover. 

Leonora Simonovis is a Venezuelan American poet, educator and scholar. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Antioch University, Los Angeles and teaches Latin American and Caribbean literature and Creative Writing at the University of San Diego. Her poetry has received Pushcart and Best of the Net nominations and her debut poetry manuscript, Study of the Raft, was selected by final judge Sherwin Bitsui as the winner of the 2021 Colorado Prize for Poetry. Some of her work can be found in Gargoyle, Kweli Journal,The American Journal of Poetry, Tinderbox poetry Journal, The Rumpus, Inverted Syntax, Arkansas International, and Diode Poetry Journal, among others.
