All are welcome to a discussion and workshop on visual poetry, created and led by Andrew Venell.

In this session we will examine the shared characteristics of images and text, exploring visual poetic traditions from ideograms and concrete poetry to cut-ups, erasures, manipulated letterforms and asemic writing. We will view and discuss works by a diverse group of poets and visual artists, considering not just words but their form, the spaces around and between them, and how they interact with images to produce greater meaning. Participants will be provided with a collection of digital resources and through exercises, demonstrations and prompts we will experiment with techniques at the intersection of writing and visual art.

Andrew Venell is a Chicago-based visual artist. Recent works have appeared in TIMBER, force / fields anthology and Petrichor. He is the author of the collage comic book Male Tears, the early internet hyperfiction “BuyOrBeware.com” and a video game called “Live Disasters.” His multimedia text-and-artworks have been exhibited in galleries, museums and new media festivals worldwide. He holds a B.A. in Art-Semiotics from Brown University and an M.F.A. in New Genres from the San Francisco Art Institute.

Registration is required; space is limited. To register, email [email protected] with the date and time of the session you would like to attend. If you would like to attend more than one workshop this month, please let us know which topic is your first choice, second choice, etc. We will do our best to accommodate everyone's wishes while allowing as many people to participate in these workshops as is possible.
