Workshops & Discussions

Forms & Features with Casey Larkin Mazer Carsel

| 12:00 AM - 2:00 AM

In an historical poem, the writer turns their eyes to the past to parse the present (and themselves within it) and to catch a glimpse of some as-yet unseeable future. This workshop opens a space for participants to interrogate the purpose, impact, and craft of historical poems. We will critically examine two poems in particular: Layli Long Soldier’s “38,” and Saflia Elhillo’s, “Second Quarantine with Abdelhalim Hafez.” You will leave with a stronger grasp on the genre, as well as the beginnings of two pieces of historical poetry.

This workshop is for participants aged 18 and older, of all backgrounds and experiences with reading and writing poetry.
