Ezzat Goushegir reads her one-woman play, The Bride of Acacias. The play is initially set in 1950s Iran, in an era that saw the overthrow of Iran’s democratically elected government in a U.S.-engineered coup, and follows Forugh Farrokhzad, an Iranian poet and filmmaker who highlighted the plight of women in Iran. Farrokhzad travels to Germany, where she challenges convention with her bold, eloquent, and often erotic explorations of relationships. Iranian American playwright, author, film critic, and poet Ezzat Goushegir has published four books in Farsi, including collections of short stories, a book of poetry, and a book of plays. In 1990 Goushegir was a Fellow Writer in the University of Iowa International Writing Program. She is currently teaching playwriting at DePaul University.
