All experience levels are welcome to a monthly book group moderated by library staff. In 2013, the library will ask individuals from varied backgrounds to select a title that has been meaningful to them. Space is limited to 15 participants. Please register in advance by emailing [email protected].

December’s curator, *Theaster Gates, selected Harryette Mullen’s Recyclopedia for the following reasons:

"I feel a common bond—her work is constantly looking at how language is birthed and how it gets recycled. She shows how the American experience is filtered through the black body."

Chicago-based artist Theaster Gates has developed an expanded practice that includes space development, object making, performance and critical engagement with many publics. Founder of the non-profit Rebuild Foundation, Gates is currently Director of Arts and Public Life at the University of Chicago. Gates’s recent exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago extended the work he conceived for dOCUMENTA(13) in Kassel, Germany. Other recent exhibition and performance venues include the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York City; Whitechapel Gallery, London; Punta della Dogana, Venice; Santa Barbara Museum of Art; Fabric Workshop and Museum, Philadelphia; Birmingham Museum of Art; Contemporary Art Museum, Houston; Locust Projects, Miami; Seattle Art Museum; Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art; Milwaukee Art Museum; and the Armory Show and Whitney Biennial in New York.

*Theaster Gates will not be able to attend the Book Club on December 20.
