Don Share’s First Issue as Editor of Poetry
CHICAGO — The first issue of Poetry from newly appointed editor Don Share is now available online. Share was named editor of Poetry in May after the announcement of Christian Wiman’s departure earlier this year. Share served as senior editor of Poetry under Wiman’s editorship, and for the six years that Wiman and Share worked together, Poetry saw its largest circulation ever.
Share’s enthusiasm for the contemporary evolution of language in poetry will be part of his refreshed editorial approach to Poetry. “Historically, editorial shifts have always reflected the temperament and vision of the magazine’s new editor,” says Share. “I hope to someday be known as what the composer Van Dyke Parks was once called—‘a futuristic traditionalist.’”
The October 2013 issue of Poetry, which also marks the magazine’s 101st year, features first appearances by Heather Christle, CA Conrad, Hannah Gamble and Nate Marshall; a portfolio of previously unpublished letters from Robert Creeley; and essays from Peter Quartermain and Christina Davis, as well as Don Share’s own message to readers, in which he explains his approach as editor.
