On this day in 1861, the Indian polymath and Nobel Laureate, Rabindranath Tagore was born in Kolkata. Tagore, who began writing poetry at eight yrs old, published his first significant volume of poetry when he was sixteen, under the pseudonym, Bhanushingho, “Sun Lion”. Tagore protested the British Raj and endorsed independence for India. He was a great admirer of Mohandas Ghandi, whom he named “Mahtma” or “Great Soul” out of his deep respect . . .
