Let There Be LIGHGHT!

Ugly Duckling Presse announces a new event series, starting first at Berl's Brooklyn Poetry Shop. It's called Lighght! (After the Aram Saroyan poem, of course.) We love the title and the first event sounds great: Ainsley Morse and Bela Shayevich, Brian Droitcour, and David B. Goldstein! Increased details, below:

Ugly Duckling Presse is pleased to announce Lighght Reading—a new event series featuring emerging poets and underexposed writing in translation. Lighght Reading will occur bi-monthly at a variety of locations in New York City and beyond; all events will be free and open to the public. Limited-edition broadsides, letterpressed at the UDP studio, will accompany each reading.

The first Lighght Reading will be held at Berl’s Brooklyn Poetry Shop at 7pm on March 21st, with readings from Ainsley Morse and Bela Shayevich, Brian Droitcour, and David B. Goldstein.

Morse and Shayevich are the translators of the late Russian minimalist poet Vsevolod Nekrasov (I Live I See, UDP, 2013). Droitcour will read from his translations of Moscow Conceptualist, Andrey Monastyrsky (forthcoming from UDP). Goldstein is the author of Laws of Rest (BookThug, 2013) and the forthcoming Object Permanence (UDP, 2014).

The series takes its name from Aram Saroyan’s poem “lighght” (Complete Minimal Poems, UDP/Primary Information, 2014). Inspired by the poem’s emphasis on the materiality of the word and the play between oral and written language, Lighght Reading will connect the materiality of the page to the orality of a poetry reading.
