While hunting down the poems for D. Scot Miller's playlist, I remembered that we were housemates for a brief period in 2008. Along with Doug (as I know D. Scot), I lived with the artist Tân Khánh Cao, the musician Danny Cao, and Doug's son, Tre' in a big flat in SF's Japantown. Although I myself was a resident for only six weeks, my cat, Pony, stayed a while longer. I don't think she ever forgave me for removing her from the apartment with Tân, Doug, and Danny, where she was given home cooked meals and lots of attention.
I was familiar with Doug's name long before I actually met him, through his role as host of Eulipia, a performance series that ran for several years out of the Luggage Store, and also through his frequent appearance in the byline of reviews and articles printed in East Bay Express and San Francisco Bay Guardian. Doug was one of the first people I thought of asking to participate in the poetry mixtape project, because he is one of those artists who seems to be just as passionate about championing the work of others as he is about his own creative projects. I love what he put together and I hope you all do, too.
D. Scot Miller is a Bay Area writer, visual artist, teacher, and curator. He currently writes book reviews for Gawker.com and is the author of The AfroSurreal Manifesto.
