Brook Emery

Australian poet Brook Emery earned a PhD in creative arts from the University of Newcastle. His lyric poems weave philosophy, marine science, and psychology with cantilevered syntax and careful attention to rhythm. He is the author of several poetry collections, including and dug my fingers in the sand (2000), Misplaced Heart (2003), Uncommon Light (2007), and have been and are (2016).

In 2015, Emery edited the Australian Poetry Anthology alongside Sarah Holland-Batt. He is a mentor at the Australian Society of Authors, an organization that helps nurture the careers of aspiring, unpublished writers.

Emery’s awards include the Dennis Butler Memorial Prize, the Newcastle Poetry Prize, the Australian Sports Poetry Award, the Arts Queensland Judith Wright Calanthe Award, and the Bruce Dawe National Poetry Prize. Emery taught high school for more than 20 years and has chaired the Australian Poetry Festival and the Poets Union. He lives in Sydney.
