Poet Matt Rasmussen was born in International Falls, Minnesota. He earned his BA from Gustavus Adolphus College and an MFA from Emerson College. He is the author of the chapbook Fingergun (2006) and the full-length collection Black Aperture (2013), which won a Walt Whitman Award from the Academy of American Poets and was a National Book Award finalist. Praising the book, judge Jane Hirshfield noted, “Autobiographical, speculative, imaginal, at times bitterly comic, often lyrically surreal, Matt Rasmussen's transformative poems look outward … [are] built on the observable leaf, field, hand, bird, and act.”

Rasmussen’s honors and awards include fellowships from Yaddo, the Loft Literary Center, the Jerome Foundation, Intermedia Arts, and the McKnight Foundation. He is a founding member of the poetry press Birds, LLC. Rasmussen has taught at his alma mater, Gustavus Adolphus College.
