This week, actress Amber Tamblyn talked about her love for poetry with the New York Post. As Harriet readers know, she’s been writing poetry even before her acting career took off, and retains a love for the art. And she’s gearing up for “Comedy Does Poetry ... Does Comedy!,” a benefit for Bowery Arts & Sciences which will also include David Cross, Fred Armisen, Kristen Schaal and “other respected writers.” Tamblyn doesn’t discuss her tastes at length in the interview, but she does let us in on the authors that she has recommended to James Franco via text message:

I always recommend one classic and one modern poet. For classics, I would go with John Ashbery or Anne Sexton – read the greats and see why they’re considered greats. In terms of contemporary writers, there’s Jeffrey McDaniel – who is my favorite living contemporary writer. He told me that to write a good poem you have to imagine your ass off. I think that’s a great way to think about poets and writing a poem that’s interesting and exciting and doesn’t feel old.
