Glaze, 92, is the author of eight books of poetry and has published two collections of selected works. He initially won critical acclaim with the publication of his first book, "Damned Ugly Children: Poems," in 1966.

While born in Nashville, Glaze was raised in Birmingham, which he often reflects on in his writing. Glaze attended Harvard University, where he became friends with Robert Frost, before serving in the United States Air Force during World War II.

“Alabama has so many talented people who make a great impact, especially in the arts,” said Gov. Robert Bentley. “Here is a man who has had a great impact on the literature of Alabama. Today I am honored to commission Andrew Glaze as the new Poet Laureate for the State of Alabama."
