About
The Bay Area Public School began in August of 2012, kicking off with a week of events we called the Summer School. Since then we’ve grown to hundreds of participants, multiple self-directed classes every week and are building a local network of community spaces for self-directed learning. We recently joined a community space in downtown Oakland at 2141 Broadway with Sudoroom.
The Network
Bay Area Public School is part of an international network of free, learner-directed, community supported schools. It was initiated by a group of people in Los Angeles in 2008. There are now schools in Los Angeles, New York, Berlin, San Juan Puerto Rico, Durham, and others.
How It Works
You can propose just about anything you’d like to learn about or pitch a topic that you would like to to share your knowledge with others. Everybody has lots of different interests and lots of experience to share.
The easiest way is to sign up on http://thepublicschool.org and propose what you’d like to learn about or teach.
You can also send these suggestions to our email, in person, twitter, carrier pigeon, at events, or drop by 2141 Broadway.
Once you make a proposal, it can gather steam, get feedback, and bring collaborators and fellow students together.
The final step is to schedule the event once a class is ready to happen… that’s it.
Go BAPS!
