Letter from Poetry Magazine
Letter to the Editor
BY Frederick Smock
Dear Editor,
In one brief review, Michael Robbins manages to smear his subject Robert Hass as well as Mary Oliver, Billy Collins, Sharon Olds, and Galway Kinnell. This from a reviewer without a book to his name. Anyone can pick through a selected poems and find weak lines. Robbins largely ignores the many fine poems that Hass has produced over a lifetime of patient and careful attention to craft, some of which this reader—and I am sure that I am not alone here—has lovingly memorized and recited upon many occasions. Hass deserved better.
