Poetry is now being edited by three staff members who have worked for the magazine in various roles over the years: Holly Amos, Lindsay Garbutt, and Fred Sasaki. As we work together to edit Poetry, we are reminded of an earlier group editorship in the magazine’s history.

In 1942, George Dillon stepped down as editor of Poetry when he was called to serve in the armed forces during WWII. Two editorial staff members, Peter De Vries and Jessica Nelson North, began editing the magazine together. Over the next seven years, the group editorship took many configurations and multiple editors, including Hayden Carruth, Katinka Loeser, John Frederick Nims, Margedant Peters, and Marion Strobel, along with additional support staff and advisors. The work was shared, as was the temperament of the magazine inherited from Harriet Monroe.

We expect our current editorial configuration to be similarly shared and, as is evident from our titles, on an interim basis until a new editor or editors are hired. As Jessica Nelson North wrote about “The Magazine Today” in 1942, “Good poetry must reflect the age in which it is written.” A good magazine must too.
