Letter from Poetry Magazine
Letter to the Editor
BY Mike Van Winkle
Dear Editor,
Your October issue broke my heart. It managed to confirm my worst fears that today's poetry is held captive by the self absorbed drivel of modernists. What hurt me even more was the editor's own admission in the introduction to "Antagonisms" that the art we all love is being driven into irrelevance: "and at a time when so few people are inclined to turn to poetry at all . . ."
If your mission is to "de-massify" poetry, let me congratulate you. You are doing a fine job. However, if your mission is to get your magazine into the hands of a new generation of poetry lovers and those who will become supporters of the art, you could make a good start by setting higher standards for your contributors.
