Letter from Poetry Magazine
Letter to the Editor
BY Neal Whitman
Dear Editor,
Much thanks to David Ferry for proving once again that poetry is not just another way of saying something, but is. He demonstrates ably with his excerpted translation of Virgil’s Aeneid [February 2009] that even a narrative poem that could be told as a prose tale is not just another way of telling the story.
Then a bonus. Two of Ferry’s own poems take us back to the flight from Troy and on the run to God knows where. Robert Fitzgerald, who first introduced me to Virgil, was powerfully spare in his praise of student work: NAAB (Not at all bad). Mr. Ferry, NAAB!
