Outside One
By Julie Carr
learns to see through things
like water and the rich
sucked so nearly dry I crave
lung-lift Ella’s broken love
poem like soil salty wet
outside one hopes for bread
or smoke to throb up
from the under-swell now
pumped so low like the life span
of a dog oh Ogallala
we must let you rest for once
the water’s gone it’s gone
