Alice Schertle

B. 1941
Children’s poet Alice Schertle was born in Los Angeles and educated at the University of Southern California and the University of California at Los Angeles, where she studied with Myra Cohn Livingston. She is a former elementary school teacher and the author of more than 40 books, and her poems for children explore themes of nature and language, often with the playful use of rhyme. Her children’s books include How Now, Brown Cow? (1994), I Am the Cat (1999), ¡Pío Peep!: Traditional Spanish Nursery Rhymes (2003), and We (2007). With Cathy Pavia, she authored the Cathy and Company picture book series. Her honors include the Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award and the Christopher Award. Schertle lives in New Salem, Massachusetts.
