Born in Mexico City in 1949, David Huerta is regarded as one of the leading Mexican poets of his generation. He is the author of numerous collections of poetry, including El Jardín de la luz and El correo de los Narvales, dedicated to the work of Pablo Neruda. In 2009, Copper Canyon Press published a bilingual edition of his selected works, Before Saying Any of the Great Words, with translations by Mark Schafer. 

Huerta’s honors include the prestigious Xavier Villaurrutia Award, two Guggenheim Fellowships, and the Carlos Pellicer Prize. He is an editor at the Mexican publishing house Fondo de Cultura Económica, a political columnist for the newspaper Proceso, and teaches literature at the Universidad Autónoma de México. Since 2003, he has been a member of the Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte.
