Donato Francisco Mattera

1935—2022

Donato Francisco Mattera, better known as Don Mattera, was a South African poet and activist. As part of his struggle for a democratic South Africa, Mattera helped to form the Union of Black Journalists, the African Writer's Association, and the Congress of South African writers. Mattera wrote a widely-read autobiography titled Memory is the Weapon (1987), and his poems include the book Azanian Love Song (1994).
