Edward A. Richards
1898—1964
Poet and scholar Edward Ames Richards was the author of several books of poetry, including Time Strikes (1939), Cathedral (1959), and the posthumous collection The Slopes of Night (1965). His critical study, Hudibras in the Burlesque Tradition (1937, 1972), has remained an influential work of scholarship. He was awarded the Robert Frost Award of the Poetry Society of America. He earned his BA at Amherst College and his MA from Columbia University, and he went on to teach at both schools. He also served as national director of the Junior Red Cross in Washington, DC.
