Gail Tremblay

Gail Tremblay is an Onondaga/Mi’Kmaq poet, writer, teacher, and artist born in Buffalo, New York. After graduating from the University of New Hampshire with a BA in drama, she earned an MFA in creative writing from the University of Oregon.

Tremblay is the author of several books of poetry, including Farther From and Too Close to Home (2013), Indian Singing in 20th Century America (1990), Close to Home (1981), and Night Gives Women the Word (1979). Blending modern and traditional styles in both her writing and her artwork, Tremblay juxtaposes the modern Native American experience with tradition, placing emphasis on the encounters between past and present. Her poetry explores the isolation that accompanies cultural misunderstanding and centuries of oppression.

Tremblay has taught at Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, for more than 25 years.
