Marie Uguay
1955—1981
Canadian poet Marie Uguay (née Lalonde) was born in Montreal. When she was 16, Les Éditions du Noroît published her first collection Signe et rumeur (1976), which she hand-lettered and illustrated herself. Her second collection, L’Outre-Vie appeared three years later. She studied at the University of Quebec when she was diagnosed with bone cancer, requiring her leg to be amputated. She died from cancer at the age of 26.
Uguay’s posthumous collections include Marie Uguay: Autoportraits (1982), Journal (2005), and Poèmes (2006). Daniel Sloate edited and translated a volume of Uguay’s selected poems, which was published in 1990 by Guernica.
