Sapphire (she/her) is the author of the poetry books American Dreams, first published by High Risk Books/Serpent’s Tail in 1994 and reissued by Vintage Books in 1996; and Black Wings & Blind Angels (Alfred A. Knopf, 1999). She is also the author of the bestselling novels The Kid (Penguin Press, 2011) and PUSH (Alfred A. Knopf, 1996), which was made into the Academy Award–winning film Precious. In 2022, PUSH was included in the New York Times list "The 25 Most Significant New York City Novels From the Last 100 Years.” Sapphire lives in New York City.
