Sungjae Lee

Sungjae Lee (he/they) is a Seoul-born, Chicago-based artist and writer who works in performance, installation, text, and video. His practice centers on the need for visibility and representation of queer Asians in a Western context. Lee’s work has been presented in South Korea, Sweden, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States. His performance pieces have been featured in Emergency INDEX (Ugly Duckling Presse 2019, 2020) and A Research on Feminist Art Now by No New Work (No New Work, 2018) among other publications. 

He has been an artist-in-residence at ACRE, High Concept Labs, HATCH Projects, Vermont Studio Center, Millay Colony, and Yaddo. He received support from the 2022–2023 Kala Art Institute Fellowship, the Franklin Furnace Fund for Performance Art from 2021–22, and the 2020 AHL Foundation Artist Fellowship. 

In 2023, Lee performed in the Chicago-based READINGS series. He is an instructor of performance at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). He earned a BFA in sculpture from Seoul National University in 2014 and an MFA in performance art from SAIC in 2019.
